Panos Pictures

I found a lot of my old favorite photos looking through the Magnum Photo collection. While I was searching, I even found that an exhibit catalog that I have wanted to buy that was way too expensive because it was out of print is being printed again.

I also started looking through other documentary photo collections using keyword searches. I looked up some of my favorite subjects like books, snowboarding (which is actually listed as snow boarding, two words, for some reason in ArtStor), surfing…

I found a great documentary photo collection from an agency called Panos Pictures. I especially like the images that come up using the subject searches for tea and human rights. The picture that I chose is a picture of Rwanda. The picture was taken in 2010, 16 years after a genocide caused mass destruction in this country. The title, “A newly constructed village part of the government's villagisation policy to create new settlements with good water and sanitation services in order to house some of the approximately 1.6 million internally displaced persons following the 1994 genocide”, explains that this village is the result of a program designed to rebuild Rwanda. I think that this is a great photo in and of itself but knowing the history of this country and what the people have been through makes it even more so.
